Caramel Pecan Sticky Buns...Pumpkin Bread with Pumpkin Cream Cheese Spread...Pumpkin Corn Bread Muffins...Asiago Cheese and Onion Braid...Apple Cranberry Crisp with Pumpkin Spice Eggnog Sauce...Pear Custard Pie...Pumpkin Truffle Pound Cake with Browned Butter Icing...Big Soft Ginger Cookies...are you getting hungry yet? These are the food items that I learned how to make at the Fall Baking class at Thanksgiving Point last Wednesday. They did free drawings throughout the class (for leftovers), and I won a mini-loaf of pumpkin bread! Really good stuff. My favorites from this list were the Caramel Pecan Sticky Buns and the Asiago Cheese and Onion Braid. There was so much going on- that's a lot of baking to fit into a 2 1/2 hour class!
It was the third cooking class I have ever attended. I have been to an asian food cooking class at Ace Hardware in North Salt Lake, and a sushi-making class at Sur La Table at the Gateway in Salt Lake City. I enjoyed the Thanksgiving Point class- I got a packet of recipes, and got to learn about baking and different types of food. If you want to look at what classes Thanksgiving Point is offering for November, click here. Some classes are already full, so make sure you register early! The class I attended cost about $60, so just prepare for that. Ace's Hardware doesn't post their cooking classes online (not that I've been able to find, anyways)- check the Salt Lake Tribune or Deseret News for a class schedule.
As for Sur La Table, there are a couple of classes that caught my eye- the first is the Turkey 101 Class (I shy away from whole poultry- but I really want to try it- I've made pumpkin-filled ravioli, I can take on a turkey!). This is on Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m.- "In this one-and-a-half hour workshop you’ll learn about all things turkey. From brining and roasting to carving and selecting at the market. You’ll also learn about the differences between, frozen, fresh, free-range and organic. We’ll send you home with recipes for a complete thanksgiving menu, and the confidence to get the turkey done right." And it's only $25, which is the cheapest cooking class I have seen yet (and you get plenty of valuable information, too)!
MENU: Turkey Stock - Porcini Mushroom, Cognac & Thyme Gravy - Apple, Rosemary and Sage Brined Turkey - Juniper and Herb Brine Turkey
The next class is Simple Christmas Morning Entertaining on December 16 at 6:30 p.m. Who doesn't love breakfast food?? This class is being taught by Kelsey Nixon, a Utah native in her 20's who was a finalist in The Next Food Network Star reality show. I have read many articles about her, and every review has been great- I really want to attend this class! She started her own food cooking show when she was attending BYU called "Cooking for College Students," or something to that effect. Quite the boot-strapper, and she loves cooking, too! This one is a little more expensive- $65 or something like that- but it looks like it would be really fun.
"Join chef Kelsey Nixon as she shares with you her stress free menu for the perfect Christmas Brunch. She'll share gourmet recipes that are surprisingly easy to make, which means you spend more time with friends and family and less time in the kitchen."
MENU: Cranberry-Cheese Danish - Maple Nut Cinnamon Buns - Quiche Lorraine - Banana Stuffed French Toast with Maple Streusel Topping - Home Fried Potatoes - Spiced Apple Scones.
If you are interested in going to these or any other cooking class, please let me know!
Happy Halloween, everyone!
