Benihana Sushi

Ahhhh, sushi. The contemporary eater's dream meal. At least mine and my husband's, anyway. Sushi is soooo good. I've been to a couple of local places- Tsunami (by the dollar theater in Sugarhouse), Tepanyaki (in Layton); and we also went to a sushi making class at Sur La Table once (at the Gateway). All of those places were very good, but there is one place in downtown Salt Lake City that I have to recognize as my favorite sushi place- Benihana. You probably remember this place as one of those restaurants that do the big table grill that you sit around in groups, and the chef makes your food right in front of you and flips knives and food - everything you were told NOT to do at the table as a child. But- I LOVE their sushi. Here's the list of sushi we had at our dinner the other night:

1. Rainbow Roll- Tuna, shrimp, yellowtail, izumidai and salmon wrapped around a California roll. This was REALLY good. A nice variety of incredibly yummy fish.

2. Shrimp Crunchy Roll- Shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber, crab sticks, tempura crumbs. This was MY FAVORITE! Creamy avocado, crunchy tempura...

3. California Roll- Avocado, crab sticks, cucumber & roasted sesame seeds. This is a very basic sushi dish- but a classic!

4. Philadelphia Roll- Salmon, cream cheese, scallions & cucumber. My husband liked this one, but I didn't care for it much.

5. Yellowtail Nigiri- Yellowtail salmon is my FAVORITE fish with sushi. I discovered yellowtail when I first tried sushi with my older brother, and it's been my favorite ever since.

Mmm, I better stop writing about sushi, or we might need to make a late night run- a word to the wise- Costco sushi and Smith's sushi is NOT real sushi. It will ruin your love for sushi for life (or at least for a couple of months! And that's a long time to go without sushi).

Here is my confession......I have never even had sushi! But, after reading your entry I think I will have to give it a shot. Thanks for the tip on not attempting Smiths or Costco's.
