I have a funny story to share. I have learned that no matter what the circumstances are, there is always something to laugh about every single day. You have to have a couple of happy moments for every horrible, frusterating moment, right? So yesterday I was in the elevator in my office building- I was heading down to the first floor. The elevator stopped at a floor, and in walked a man (probably in his early 30's) with an adorable little girl (probably between 4-6 years old).
The little girl looked up at me as she walked into the elevator, and she kept looking at me as her dad walked in, pushed the first floor button, and stepped into place next to her on the opposite side of the elevator. I couldn't help but smile at her- she was very cute. She had long blond hair and big blue eyes. She was wearing a cute gray dress with pink hearts. She also wore thick white tights and tan, fuzzy boots to complete the ensemble.
After about 5 seconds of riding in the elevator, she looked up at her dad and asked "is that one of your girlfriends?" I wasn't sure how to react, so I just laughed a little bit and smiled at her. Her dad told her no, and he started laughing (somewhat awkwardly). Thoughts about the dad pushed aside, I knew we had approximately 15 more seconds left in our little elevator ride together, and I wanted to make them as bearable as possible (and I felt bad for the little girl- she was pretty embarrassed). I ignored the dad, looked at the little girl (who had buried her face in her dad's leg for a little bit), and I started talking to her:
"You look like you're all ready to go outside! That's a really cute dress." She pulls her coat down a little bit and points wordlessly at the little pink hearts on her dress. I gasp. "Oh, there are pink hearts on it! That's really cool. Do you like pink?" She nods. I smiled in agreement- "me, too." By this time, we are on the first floor, and I quickly push the button to go back up to my office floor. "Bye!" I called out to her as she and her dad walked out. She waved at me and followed her dad away from the elevator. Though slightly embarrassing and awkward at the time, it's a fairly amusing story now. And the next time I get asked whether or not I have witnessed a five-year-old girl ask her dad (in an elevator) if I am one of his girlfriends, I can say- yes; yes I have.
