Twilight (sigh)

Okay, so this is a freakishly-inappropriate time of night to be blogging, but I can't help it. I'm still trying to recover from the adrenaline rush of seeing this movie. Yesterday morning I saw Twilight with my friend Laura, and let me tell you, the movie is AMAZING. Regardless of your expectations of what the characters looked/acted like, they did a GREAT job. I've never been "obsessed" with a series like this before, or anticipated the movie version of a series so badly. I read that Stephanie Meyers was hired as a consultant for the film, which I think helped make it more authentic to the true story. Was the film without its faults? Of course not- there are always things you wish were different with any movie- I would have been fine if it were eight hours long and had EVERY detail from the book, but, what can you do.

For the first five minutes, I was disappointed in the actor choice for Edward- but after that five minutes, it was all over, baby. Edward is plenty attractive. End of discussion. I like all of the other characters and their personalities- especially Carlyle, Bella, Bella's dad, Emmett, and Alice. I think the actor for Edward did a great job depicting his character. I also read that all of the actors read the Twilight series and were dedicated to doing a great job on this movie. This wasn't like Harry Potter with a bunch of 11-year-olds running around with fake wands. I was honestly very satisfied with the end result of this movie.

I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to pick the tune for Bella's lullaby, or search through hundreds of actors/actresses to find the perfect fits for the characters. And for a cast that wasn't all that well known (at least not by me), it was perfect! Now, maybe I'm jaded by the fact that I love these books- in fact, watching the movie makes me want to read through the books again; or at least buy the soundtrack- GREAT selection of music throughout the movie, by the way- my favorites were Clair De Lune by Debussy, and the music played while the vampires are playing baseball.

This movie also makes me appreciate the writing abilities of Stephanie Meyers. Regardless of whether or not it's a masterful work of art like Shakespeare or whatever (and I had a conversation - no, more like a one-sided lecture that I didn't care to dispute because it wasn't worth it to me- people are welcome to have their own opinions- with a co-worker on how "awful" of a writer she was and how the caliber of the books were not on a "superior" level by any stretch of the imagination), she had the talent, ability, and motivation to write these amazing books that women and men of all ages and backgrounds have obsessed over. To be able to write something that SO many people have loved and appreciated is an amazing gift (plus, I'm sure the money is just a side perk!).

I completely believe in doing something because you enjoy it and because it makes you happy- even if it's not the most economical or practical route to take; this can be the case with an education, career or hobby. How many books have been written in my lifetime alone that have experienced this kind of success- even if it can be perceived sometimes as a mere shoddy trend? So many people out there have gone another route than try to achieve their original dreams because they either don't believe in themselves, the opportunity passes them by, they fail and don't want to try again, or another observer tries to convince them of that "other, more practical" route.

Well, here's to you, Stephanie Meyers- for being another solid example that you can achieve an original dream, regardless of the circumstances and what others think.
