Vienna Bistro- erstaunlich (amazing)!

My husband and I went to Vienna Bistro for dinner tonight- this restaurant is located at 132 South Main Street in Salt Lake City. We enjoyed the following:

Appetizer:
Raclette- baked raclette cheese, non-pasteurized French cow's milk cheese, served with pickles and pearl onions.

Amazing cheese- I've never tasted anything like it (and Hermy's family likes their cheese). Expensive for the amount of food you get, and the cheese stinks to high heaven- but still really tasty. You put the cheese on little pieces of sourdough bread, and then top that with a pickle slice, and take a bite- mmmmmm.

Main Course:
I ordered the Rahmschnitzel- all natural pork loin, pan seared in a rich mushroom cream sauce. Yeah, this fit the bill for me. I love pork loin, and I love mushrooms. Plus, it was served with house-made spatzle (prounounced shpetz-le) and blaukraut (the red cabbage version of sauerkrat, but much better tasting).

My husband got the Kalbs Bratwurst- veal sausage with onion demi-glace served with house potatoes and sauerkraut. Five years ago you couldn't have paid me to eat bratwurst- but since I have a husband that loves German food, I've given it a taste here and there, and this was a delicious brat. Very flavorful, especially with a side of German mustard. Once again- five years ago you couldn't have paid me to eat any kind of mustard, but German mustard is a lot sweeter than the American stuff.

Dessert:
We had the Sacher Torte- said to have been made with the original recipe from the famous Sacher Hotel in Vienna. It was a German chocolate torte with a ganache over the top. We also tried a strawberry yogurt cake that had a thin slice of chocolate cake on the bottom, a thin slice of white cake in the middle, and a thin slice of almond cake on the top. All were very good.

Bottom Line:
It was a fun, little restaurant that made me and my husband really want to go to Germany. Definitely isn't cheap, but great food that helps you experience a piece of the culture of a country (when you don't have the means to travel there just yet) is worth it.
