After the recommendation from a friend that I would love this restaurant, I excitedly agreed… and went the next day. Couldn’t help it- it was Labor Day. Really wanted to do something fun. I’ve been wanting to try Log Haven (http://www.log-haven.com/) for a couple of years now, and I was glad the stars aligned so my husband and I could go.
Log Haven is located up Millcreek Canyon in Salt Lake City. It is a popular choice for events, including weddings- in fact, there was one going on outside while we ate. I always like places that use local food products, and I LOVE random and flavorful food combinations. Plus, the owner of the restaurant is a woman! Margo Provost has received numerous accolades as a result of her amazing business.
First and foremost, I must write about the Arugula & Heirloom Tomato Salad with House Made Ricotta and Pesto Vinaigrette. I have never thought to add ricotta to a salad, but this was phenomenal- and it’s their seasonal fall salad, so hurry in and try it before it changes! I have truly fallen in love with tomatoes this year- not mushy, over-ripe tomatoes- but firm, sweet, colorful tomatoes. Heirloom tomatoes have splashes of yellow, orange, and red, and they taste fantastic.
I also had gorgonzola mashed potatoes with my main course- once again, I have never thought to add such strongly flavored cheese to mashed potatoes, as cheddar, butter and sour cream are the usual additions du jour; it was fairly good, but there was a little too much gorgonzola for my taste. BUT, my husband’s aged gruyere mashed potatoes were wonderful; his potatoes were paired with a filet mignon, and I had pork tenderloin with a grilled peach. I wish I had the actual name and description of everything, but the most recent menu is not on Log Haven’s website.
Overall, the food is incredible, creative and flavorful; and the atmosphere is relaxing, quiet and romantic. It’s high on the cost side of things, but if you need a special restaurant to celebrate, Log Haven is the place to be.
